We’ve all wondered how it would feel to be Spider-man. To swing almost effortlessly through cities and have super senses sharp enough to feel danger coming. The team over at Insomniac Games knew this and built the greatest interactive Spider-man story yet.

Marvel’s Spider-man for the PS4 follows an older Peter Parker whose been doing Spidey work for about 7 years. He has already put away Rhino, Electro, Vulture, and Scorpion. With the tutorial ending with Fisk being sent to the Raft, you could say Spidey’s pretty experienced at super heroing. But Peter also has a job working for Otto Octavius, helping him develop robotic limbs for amputees. Everything gets that much more complicated when Aunt May’s boss at the F.E.A.S.T. shelter starts acting suspicious.

The team over at insomniac Games understood something. They understood that the fundamental thing about Spider-man is the swinging and boy did they nail it. The swinging mechanic in this game is my favourite thing. It really makes you feel like you are Spider-man. I loved it so much, I didn’t use fast travel once and by the end of the game forgot it was an option. The combat is really fun too, you get the option to approach combat stealthily or aggressively. Stealthily is kind of easier but really time consuming. Whereas going in guns blazing is really hectic and makes for some really spontaneous combat.

Most of my complaints were fixed in the PS5 remaster. A lot of the problems I had were not seeing the icons on the screen. There’s usually a lot of lights or reflections on the screen so the PS4 version was a bit of a struggle at times, especially the chase sequences and quick time events. Thankfully the remaster added options to auto complete QTEs and an option to look at waypoint. So whenever I pressed a button the camera would swivel round and face the current objective. This made things much less stressful for me and I even completed the PS5 version on its hardest difficulty, Ultimate Spider-man.

For Spidey fans this game is a must play or even a must watch because Marvel’s Spider-man is the best Spider-man movie. I know it sounds weird but that’s how it feels.
