I came across Dragon Ball a lot later than everyone else. Most people remember watching it on tv after school, having to wait until the next day to see the next part. Instead my first introduction to the Dragon Ball universe was the first Xenoverse.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse introduces a new element to the DB world - time manipulation. Xenoverse shows us that there is an organisation of fighters known as the Time Patrol. Overseen by the Supreme Kai of Time, the Time Patrollers correct any changes in history. Which brings us to the beginning of our story. After observing changes in history, Trunks uses the Dragon Balls to summon Shenron and wishes for a fighter strong enough to protect time itself. Shenron allows you to create a character and then teleports you to Trunks who tells you about the changes that have been affecting history and together you begin the hunt for the culprits.
With this being my first experience with Dragon Ball, I had no reference to what was really going on. Xenoverse jumps across the story quite a bit and things play out slightly differently to the show. But all that did was make me go and watch the show for myself, starting with Dragon Ball and then going onto Dragon Ball Z. I then replayed Xenoverse and the game felt so much better.
My main complaints are that there isn’t a lot of reason to pick any race other than Saiyan since the Super transformations let you spam ultimate attacks and the whole reward system is broken. You could do one quest over 500 times and never get the skill you’re trying to get. Luckily both of these were fixed in the sequel.
All in all, I don’t think you need to be a fan to enjoy this game; it will just as easily suck you into the show anyway.
